“Clean Up Georgia” Project (Phase III) Waste Management Problems in Shida Kartli Region
Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized meetings in Gori, Kareli, Kaspi and Khashuri Municipalities, Shida Kartli Region, where the following specific waste management issues have been revealed:
Malfunctioning of waste management system: population is not provided with relevant number of containers and waste trucks;
Problems related to collection of domestic waste in rural communities, and presence of dumpsites;
Problem with construction wastes management;
Pollution of the environment with domestic waste in surrounding of the main highway that crosses the region;
Necessity of waste separation and information shortage regarding waste recycling plants;
Difficulties with the enforcement of legal liabilities (penalties);
Lack of information about the condition of operational municipal landfills (Gori and Khashuri landfills);
Problems with the management of hazardous household waste;
Shortage of information about modern technologies and fund raising opportunities;
Necessity to improve information flow between the local and central governmental authorities;
Lack of information about donor organizations that support waste management sector;
Necessity to hold public awareness raising activities for broad segments of the population and distribute waste related information materials (leaflets, brochures, banners) management among the population and schools. Need for the delivery of respective thematic lessons for school students.
The project “Clean Up Georgia” is being implemented by a consortium of NGOs: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia” and “Raising of Ecological Awareness and Waste Management” with the financial support of the Government of Sweden, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, in cooperation with the Ltd “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia”.
