“Clean Up Georgia” Project (Phase III) Waste Management Problems in Kvemo Kartli Region
Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized meetings in Dmanisi, Gardabani, Bolnisi, Tetritskaro and Marneuli Municipalities, Kvemo Kartli Region, where the following specific waste management issues have been revealed:
Shortage of information on plants recycling domestic waste and possibilities to introduce in Georgia modern recycling technologies for municipal wastes;
Necessity for the implementation of waste separation system at their sources, need for the introduction of on-site composting by local farmers, and financial issues linked with these problems;
Shortage of information about legislative changes, priorities of national strategic documents and measures planned in the field of waste management;
Shortage of information about donor organizations
Pollution of surface water bodies with industrial wastes (in Bolnisi);
Environmental pollution with household waste (e.g. plastic bottles, sanitary pads and polyethylene films generated at green houses) and inertial/ construction waste;
Difficulties with the enforcement of legal liabilities (penalties) imposed for environmental pollution;
Ineffective operation of the composting enterprise that is arranged in the Region;
Lack of information concerning the management and condition of the operational municipal landfill;
Problems connected with the disposal of biodegradable and animal wastes on existing landfills;
Problems with the provision of waste management services due to poor road conditions in in some villages as well as lack of waste bins and trucks;
Lack of information about legal requirements for the registration of service providers in the field of waste management.
Presence of dumpsites in villages
Lack of information about timeframes defined for the construction of a new regional landfill;
Presence of street dogs which eat waste and represent potential vectors of infectious diseases;
Necessity to provide to broad masses of population information materials, for example short films, articles and brochures on waste management topics and related problems.
Necessity to carry out trainings for schoolchildren and municipality population regarding waste management issues.
The project “Clean Up Georgia” is being carried out by a consortium of NGOs: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia” and “Raising of Ecological Awareness and Waste Management” with the financial support of the Government of Sweden, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, in cooperation with the Ltd “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia”.
