On 4th April 2023, in the frames of the Keep Georgia Tidy Project funded by the Government of Sweden, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” (GSNE “Orchis”) organized tree planting campaign in the village of Khashuri Municipality -Gomi.
GSNE “Orchis” purchased 2 seedlings of Lime and 10 seedlings of Thuja from “Georgian Seedlings” Ltd for this event. Total 12 seedlings of the listed species were planted in the yard of the Public school of village Gomi.
The director, teachers and pupils of the Public school participated in the tree planting campaign together with GSNE “Orchis”.
The tree planting campaigns and other activities of Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” targeted at the restoration of vegetation cover, forests and habitats facilitate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs cover wide range of issues and address interrelated elements of the sustainable development, including: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. In this context, the measures for the protection, conservation, prevention of degradation and restoration of biodiversity are essential components of the sustainable development and accomplishment of the SDGs, which could be mainly achieved through the maintenance of multi-functional and crucial ecosystem services provided by the biodiversity.
Generally, biorestoration and tree planting measures are among the most efficient instruments for the climate change mitigation. Trees, which absorb carbon dioxide – one of the major climate change contributors, reduce its concentration in the atmosphere and respectively the rate of climate change. That’s why the global environment protection society (and not only they) pay particular attention to forest restoration in the context of combating climate change, and that’s why the tree planting and reforestation / afforestation activates can bring particular benefits.
The Keep Georgia Tidy Project is being implemented by the non-governmental organization Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, through funding of the Government of Sweden, with support of Georgian Ministries of Environmental Protection & Agriculture, Regional Development & Infrastructure, Economy & Sustainable Development, and Education & Science, and in cooperation with the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia and Environmental Information & Education Centre.
