“Clean Up Georgia” Project (Phase III) Information on the Meetings Arranged in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Region Municipalities
From May 30 to June 3 , 2016, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Or ch is” arranged m eeting s in Poti and Zugdidi cities’ Municipalit y City Halls, also in the municipalities of Martvili, Abasha, Senaki, Khobi, Tsalendjikha, Chkhorotsku, Zugdidi, Mestia with the participation of the representatives of Governor’s Administration, mentioned municipalities’ city halls, Municipality Administration (Gamgeoba) and Assemblies (Sakrebulo), non-for profit juridical persons, media and others.
At the Meeting there were discussed the following issues: waste management in Georgia, legal requirements; international obligations and European experience; waste management planning; assessment of the impact of illegal landfills on the state of adjacent territories and on population health. The interest among the participants towards the meetings was keen which once more proves that the demand of the society is to live in clean environment and actively participate in the activities directed at the solution of problems connected with wastes.
The project “Clean Up Georgia” is being carried out by a consortium of NGOs: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia” and “Raising of Ecological Awareness and Waste Management” with the financial support of the Government ofSweden, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, in cooperation with the Ltd “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia”.
