“Clean Up Georgia” Project Information on the national summarizing Meeting held in Tbilisi city
On May 5 , 201 5 , Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Or ch is” arranged a Meeting in Tbilisi-Marriot Hotel in the framework of the project “Clean U p Georgia – Raising of Public Awareness and Involvement in Solid Waste Management Improvement ” (Phase II) . The Meeting was attended by Mr. Gigla Agulashvili, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, H.E. Mrs. Martina Quick, Ambassador of Sweden to Georgia, Mrs. Katuna Zaldastanishvili, SIDA Program Officer, representatives of the Embassies of Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Japan and USAID; Imereti Governor; representatives of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Kakheti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Guria Governors, representatives of Adjara government; Director of Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia; representatives of the Consortium of non-governmental organizations, media and others.
At the Meeting there were reviewed the main objectives and tasks of the project, implemented activities and their results, the problems connected with the management of solid municipal waste; also assessment of the impact of illegal landfills on the ecosystems of the adjacent territories and human health; forest habitats restoration in Georgia (Caucasus Eco-region); “Clean up the World, Clean up Georgia” Campaign – mobilization of the population and growth of the public involvement and awareness; Clean Region – 2014. At the end of the Meeting there was held a discussion which called forth keen interest among the participants.
The project “Clean Up Georgia – Raising of Public Awareness and Involvement in Solid Waste Management Improvement ” (Phase II) is being carried out by a consortium of NGOs consisting of Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia and “Eco-Vision”, Union of Sustainable Development, with the financial support of the Government of Sweden.
