Bioremediation Campaign in the Municipalities of Telavi, Gurjaani and Sagarejo, Kakheti Region

On 7, 11 and 13 August, 2020, in the frames of the Keep Georgia Tidy Project, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized the soil bioremediation campaign at dumpsites in the cities of Telavi, Gurjaani and Sagarejo, Kakheti Region. Total 25 people including employees of the supervision and clean-up services of Telavi, Gurjaani and Sagarejo Municipalities and local population participated in this initiative.

The campaign included sampling of soil from dumpsites identified in Telavi, Gurjaani and Sagarejo for chemical analysis, cleaning up of the dumpsite areas and bioremediation of these territories with use of clinoptilolite – a cheap raw material, which is available in Georgia. Mixing this material into soil improves its quality and chemical content (eventually) so that various seedlings could be planted in the treated area. As a result, the territory becomes not only tidy, but reinstated as well.

The Keep Georgia Tidy Project aims to attain environmentally conscious generation, to reduce pollution from municipal waste (40%) and cut greenhouse gas emissions (10%) in Georgia by 2023 as well as to decrease by 10% the content of heavy metals in contaminated soil in targeted areas.

The Keep Georgia Tidy Project is being implemented by the NGOs consortium: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, Keep Georgia Tidy and Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia through financial support of the Government of Sweden.
