In the frames of Keep Georgia Tidy Project, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” is preparing a waste management plan for Kakheti Region, what envisages the establishment of a modern waste management system at the regional level in Kakheti, specifically the development of Kakheti Regional Waste Management Plan according the requirements of the waste management and regional development strategies, and in close collaboration with and active participation of the regional administration and 8 municipalities of Kakheti as well as other relevant stakeholders.
Kakheti Regional Waste Management Plan will be designed considering the EU standards and the experience of Sweden. For this purpose, total 16 municipal level workshops in 8 municipalities and 4 regional level workshops were planned in Kakheti. The municipal level workshop in each of 8 municipalities and 1 regional level workshop were organized in Kakheti in 2019, while 2 regional level workshops were held in 2020 with the group working on Kakheti Regional Waste Management Plan.
A hybrid workshop was organized on 16th September 2021, where participated the International Experts of Waste Management of Gästrike återvinnare – Association of Five Municipalities of Sweden Per-Olof Hallberg, the management of Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” and the Waste Management Expert of this organization Mrs. Khatuna Chikviladze, the representatives of the group working on Kakheti Regional Waste Management Plan, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Acad. Solomon Pavliashvili, the Head of Development Cooperation/Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Erik Illes, the Environmental Program Officer of Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) Mrs. Khatuna Zaldastanishvili, and representatives of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia. The ongoing status of the development of the Kakheti Regional Waste Management Plan and the vision of the Regional Waste Management Plan based on Sweden case were the topics of discussions during the meeting.
The project is being implemented by Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” through funding of the Government of Sweden, with the support of Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and in close cooperation with the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia.
