Clean Up Georgia Project (Phase III) Waste Management Problems in Kakheti region
Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized meetings in Sagarejo, Gurjaani, Sighnaghi, Kvareli, Dedoplistskaro, Lagodekhi and Akhmeta Municipalities, Kakheti Region. The following waste management issues were revealed during the meetings:
v Necessity supply sufficient number of containers and trucks for waste collection;
v Availability of clean-up services for entire population of the Region; waste collection and removal are not ensured in majority of villages;
v Difficulties with raising of waste collection fee ;
v Necessity to enforce legal liabilities for waste dumping;
v Presence of uncontrolled (illegal) dumpsites in rural areas and adjacent to food markets;
v Problem related to the construction waste management, and specifically, environmental pollution with construction waste;
v Necessity to implement waste separation and minimization measures (e.g. composting) and estimation of their cost-effectiveness;
v Need to adopt and enforce a law that ensures proper management of organic waste generated from wineries;
v Necessity to implement waste management system in Tusheti;
v Shortcomings of the existing waste management system: problems with the involvement of private sector and lack of information;
v Lack of information about existing waste recycling facilities;
v Shortage of information on the current legislation and National Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan;
v Shortage of information about international funds;
v Ensuring the involvement of population and mass media in waste management process by the local self-government, and necessity to comprise all age-groups and especially school students by awareness raising measures.
The project “Clean Up Georgia” is being implemented by a consortium of NGOs: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, “Greens Movement of Georgia/ Friends of the Earth-Georgia” and “Raising of Ecological Awareness and Waste Management” with the financial support of the Government of Sweden, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, in cooperation with the Ltd “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia”.
