“Clean Up Georgia” Project (Phase III) Meetings in Municipalities of Imereti Region
On 12-16 June 2017, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized meetings in the municipalities of Vani, Baghdati, Sachkhere, Chiatura, Khoni, Samtredia, Tkibuli, Terjola, Kharagauli, and Zestaponi. They were attended by representatives of Gamgeobas and Sakrebulos, local administrative units, limited liability companies, non-entrepreneur (non-commercial) legal entities and media of the mentioned municipalities.
Among topics discussed during the meetings are: waste management currently practiced in Georgia; pertinent legal requirements; international obligations of the country in the waste management sector and respective European experience; waste management planning; assessment of impacts of existing dumpsites on ecosystems and population of neighboring territories. Meeting participants showed their vivid interest for discussed topics. This proves public demand to live in clean environment and take active part in the solution of waste management issues.
The project “Clean Up Georgia” is being carried out by a consortium of NGOs: Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis”, “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia” and “Raising of Ecological Awareness and Waste Management” with the financial support of the Government of Sweden, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, in cooperation with the Ltd “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia”.
